Listening When it Hurts: Talking Through Differences in Love
Everyone deserves dignity. Tim Shriver spoke with Diana Butler Bass in a podcast in June 2024…” Our disagreements aren’t causing divisions in our country; it’s what we do when we disagree. Do we treat the other side with dignity, or do we treat them with contempt? The first brings us together; the second drives us apart.” The Dignity Index is a tool designed to show us the difference. A portion of Ministry Day will be familiarizing ourselves with The Dignity Index, an eight-point scale that scores speech along a continuum from contempt to dignity, in as unbiased a manner as possible.
Points we will consider
- Our own anxieties and what we do to reduce them.
- Martin Luther King, Jr. – “Within the best of us, there is some evil, and within the worst of us, there is some good.” Would you agree or disagree?
- Do we ever take credit for good outcomes and blame others for bad outcomes?
- How do we handle conflict?
- Do we actively and sincerely listen to another’s point of view without our arms crossed, tapping our foot, rolling our eyes, or expressing contempt?
- Are we dismissive to others because our viewpoint does not align with theirs?
