Explanation of Application Process

How It Works…

  • It is a reimbursement grant program
  • Financial assistance is awarded to help pay the institution-stipulated costs of tuition and housing
  • Financial assistance is for one semester period and is typically between $500 and $1000
  • Candidates are eligible to receive two grants per calendar year for up to five years of an undergraduate degree plus up to another five years of a postgraduate program.

Who Can Apply…

  • Post-secondary students who are currently enrolled in accredited institutions of higher learning
  • Students who hold current membership in a congregation that belongs to the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ
  • Students who are preparing to embark on a career either as an ordained minister, a certified teacher or educator, a doctor of medicine (MD, DO, DMD or DDS), an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, or a nurse (B.S. degree), or a speech therapist, and other clinical degrees (such as a Masters in Clinical Counseling).

How to Apply…

  • Candidates are required to submit to the Penn Northeast Conference Office all the required application materials by the deadline before his/her request will be considered

What Are the Deadlines…

  • October 1 for consideration for a grant for the summer and/or fall terms
  • March 1 for consideration for a grant for the winter and/or spring terms

What Materials Need to be Sent to Penn Northeast Conference…

  • A completed application form with all required signatures including personal contact address and telephone number
  • A signed statement from an appropriate professor or school administrator on school letterhead indicating that you are enrolled in a program of study which is appropriate for one planning to become an ordained minister, a certified teacher or educator, a doctor of medicine (MD, DO, DMD or DDS), occupational therapist, physical therapist, nurse (B.S.); and, provide the total hours required for the degree and the total hours completed at the end of the current term
  •  An itemized bill from your school for the current term (the only one for which a grant can be offered), which includes the cost of tuition for credit courses only and housing (but not food charges), a confirmation that the current term’s bill has been paid, and specifies any and all grants that have been awarded to you for this term

Living Off Campus?  If you wish for the Allocations Team to consider housing costs in determining the size of your grant, provide an official statement from your educational institution about the average cost of housing on campus

Do Not Include:  Fees such as computer/technology fees, infirmary/medical service fees, or activity fees and do not include any loans which are due upon graduation and work stud

Make Sure to…

  • Sign and date the application (this is mandatory)
  • Submit all required materials to the Penn Northeast Conference Office (431 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton, PA 18071) by the submission deadline date (either March 1 or October 1)
  • Reapply! – Students must reapply each semester for a new scholarship; grants are for one semester (winter/spring; summer/fall) only. 

When Will I Be Notified…

  • Within eight weeks of the submission deadline as to whether or not you have been awarded a Gwilym T. Williams Scholarship grant
